Rebels, Women, Mining, Canada
An Interactive Map
Welcome to the Africa Canada Accountability Coalition's interactive map that describes the conflict in the Congo, Canada's role and history in the Kivus, the involvement of Canadian mining companies, what armed groups are active in the conflict, and Congolese leaders who are making a difference in the region.
Due to the volatility of this region and the ever changing positions of armed groups, information on this map may not be current. However, this map can be used to learn about the different conflict factors.
Since the creation of this map, two of the main armed groups discussed, the CNDP and the Mayi-Mayi, laid down their arms following a peace agreement on March 23, 2009. However, because of problems with incomplete integration of these groups into the Congolese national army - which also illegally exploits minerals - this information is still relevant to understanding the impacts of mineral exploitation on women and girls.
